Final Scheme Proposal

This project seeks to explore a mash-up between physical and digital modelling using Augmented Reality as a trigger. A new realm of creative modelling is discovered where physical modelling provides visual/tactile/material presence coupled with a new dimension added by digital models through its flexibility for change & animation and its ease and endless limit in form making. There is a huge potential in the combination of physical modelling with digital as one compensates the limitations of the other. Whilst physical models provide a strong visual presence, tactility and materiality, it lacks the flexibility and ease of change and adaptation of digital modelling. This project speculates an overlay of a series of digital models over a single physical site/terrain/object. This treatment allows for the exploration of many ideas over the same physical model.

The idea of a physical & digital mash-up also opens up a whole new spectrum and scope of investigation for design & creativity in the field of artistic installations. Whilst this project is viewed as an architectural design exploration, it may also be as an object, an artistic installation that seeks to blend markers within the object and treat both the markers, the physical and digital models as a holistic design. The physical model may be viewed alone as an artistic piece but also as an interactive element when combined with digital models using AR.

The use of AR provides opportunities to play with markers, their placement and their visual presence. Markers placed at various places triggers different digital models/effects/animations to add new meaning and layers to the physical model. There is an element of surprise and discovery for the viewer with different markers triggering different digital models.

This installation consists of two parts

The first will demonstrate using a physical model as terrain/site for the plug-in of a digital model. The second part seeks to reconceptualise art installations as a mash-up of digital and physical models.

A physical model that is both an object as well as an interactive art piece

Physical model transformation

Marker1
Physical model as an art object - A new structure embracing the existing physical object. There is a change in scale to the first AR model

Marker2
Physical model as terrain populated by people

Using coloured sketches as markers

Experimented with photosynth trying to get a rough replica of the physical model
This did not work out as the model created from mesh lab was not accurate enough for further modelling. Hence I resorted to recreating a rough version of the physical model using sketchup as a base for digital model add on.

Ideas/Proposal development

- A mash-up of artistic drawings/sketches/paintings/2d objects/installations using Augmented Reality as a blending tool and a tool to enhance and add a new layer of visual meaning to the installation

- Markers are designed & composed as its own artistic object

The design of markers
- work with folding, layering, staking, angling of markers. Compose markers artistically in both 2d and 3d.
- Do a mesh up of hand drawn sketches with photographs(may be translated to a 3d model using photosynth & mesh lab) and computer generated graphics.

Experimenting with using hand drawn sketches as a marker.

Default HITLab model loaded onto marker. Despite the complexity of the drawing, BuildAR seem to recognise the marker relatively well.
Makers may be presented as a framed piece of artwork and employing augmented reality, the drawing may turn into a 3d model or the drawing may be animated.
The major challenge will be to blend and integrate markers into a single art piece or installation in a subtle manner and allow viewers to discover augmented elements as they scan pass the drawing.

Taking inspiration from the work of Libeskind and Hadid, I try to create drawings incorporating the curves/fluidity of hadid and sharpness + shards/shrapnels of Libeskind.

Assignment 3 proposal - Markers as Installation, sparks life to a choreographed augmented art piece.

Re-conceptualising markers and augmented elements/models as a choreographed art piece. A sequence of augmented reality pieces that portrays an architectural story. I will be using photosynth for the reconstruction of specific architectural elements/objects. Blending and abstraction of the chosen reconstructions will become the basis of this art piece which will be triggered/sparked, brought alive by the "markers installation" in reality.

Assignment 1 submission

This is an object as well as a creative scene of atmosphere, emotion and experience exploring the ideas of geometric composition, relationships between solid and void, light and shade, and the creation of space.

It is a moment in time. The camera is metaphoric for the freezing and capturing of an instant in time and space, whilst the structure of the column resembles the growth of an organic element that develops into shelter over which the picture is taken. It is a play on the dichotomy between the man made and nature, where the beauty of each can be appreciated through the scope of a single camera lens.
